Introduction to Electrical Machines
Electrical machines are widely used in our daily life. We see the frequent use of electrical machines in different applications. We define electrical machine as a device that converts either mechanical energy to electrical energy or electrical energy to mechanical energy. When an electrical machine is used to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy, it is called a generator. When an electrical machine converts electrical energy to mechanical energy, such a device is called a motor. Any given electrical machine has the capability to convert power in either direction, any machine can be used as either a generator or a motor. Almost in all practical motors and generators energy is converted from one form to another through the action of a magnetic field.
Transformer is an electrical device that converts ac electrical energy from one voltage level to ac electrical energy at another voltage level. Electric motors in the home drive electrical appliances like refrigerators, freezers, vacuum cleaners, blenders, air conditioners, fans, and many similar appliances. Electrical power is a clean, environment friendly and efficient energy source that is easily transmittable over long distances, and easy to control. A transformer ideally converts one ac voltage level to another voltage level without resisting the actual power which has to be supplied for domestic and commercial use. If a transformer is used to steps up the voltage level of a circuit, it must decrease the current in the circuit to keep the balance of power. Therefore ac electrical power is produced at one central location and for transmission over long distances with very low losses, its voltage is stepped up and then it is stepped down again for final use. With the absence of transformer, it would not be possible to use electric power in many of the ways it is used today. Now we come to the induction motor. We define induction motor as an electrical machine that has only amortisseur windings. The distinguishing and unique feature of an induction motor is that no dc field current is required to operate the machine. It is possible to use an induction machine either as a motor or as a generator, but when it is used as a generator it has many disadvantages, so induction machine is preferred to use as an induction motor.
