Introduction to Dc Motor

Dc motor can be defined as an electrical machine which converts direct current electrical power into mechanical power. Many types of the motors depends on forces which are produced by magnetic fields. An internal mechanism is present in mostly all types of dc motor, which either electromachanical or electronic and due to the current to change in the part of the motor. The motion produced by most types of dc motor is rotary. The force and motion produced by a linear motor lies in a straight line.
The dc motor operates on simple principle. We know that a current carrying conductor is placed in a magnatic field, It experiences mechanical force in a particular direction. Let’s take a simple elementary model of a dc motor, in this model one single turn of conductor is placed between two opposite poles that is north pole and south pole. Now if we starts supplying dc through a commutator system to the single urn current starts flowing through it. At that position a positive terminal of the battery is connected with left conductor of the turn and negative terminal of the battery is connected with right conductor of the turn. Moreover, the south pole of the magnit is placed at left side north pole is placed at right side. Current in this left side conductor turn flows inward and current in right side conductor turn flows outward. The conductors are carrying current and placed in magnatic field. Both of them experience mechanical force which is acting on them. The direction of the mechanical force can easily be determined by applying fleming’s left hand rule. For that we have to streatch 4th finger, 2nd finger and thumb of our left hand at right angle to one another. What that if the 4th finger is a lined along the direction of magnatic field, that is from north pole to south pole and 2nd finger or middle finger is alligned along the direction of current in the left side conductor then thumb indicates the direction of the mechanical force. Similarly, again if 4th finger is alligned along the direction of magnatic field that is from north pole to south pole and 2nd finger or middle finger alligned along the direction of current in the right side conductor then thumb indicates the direction of mechanical force in the downward direction. Due to these upward and downward forces on the turn, a torque is produced which tends to rotate the turn in clockwise direction. After clockwise rotation of 90 degree, the turn comes to a vertical position with respect to the magnetic field.
