Introduction to Mining Engineering

Mining engineering is defined as an engineering discipline which deals with the practice, theory and application of extracting and processing minerals from the natural environment and surroundings. Mining engineering is attached and associated with other disciplines like geology, mineral processing and metallurgy, geotechnical engineering and surveying. Mining engineer establishes a well defined planning for all operations. Mining engineer executes all mining operations like exploration and discovery of the mineral resource. Mining engineer also undergoes feasibility study, mine design, production and operations to mine closure.

In process of mining, there are some safety precautions which are very important. When mineral extraction is carried out, a certain amount of waste and scrap material is produced which pollutes the environment. Mining cause disturbance of the environment. Mining also leads to unbalance of other natural resources which are located in vicinity of mines. Mining engineer should keep in mind that mining destroys the natural balance of the environment.
So, in this regard the mining engineer design the overall process in such a way that mining results in minimum pollution and minimum loss of natural balance. Mining also keeps a history. Mining contributes in the economy of different civilizations and countries in excellent manner. Ancient romans invent mining engineering. They invent and developed mining methods which are used on large scale. They also invent the method of hydraulic mining.
The most important and foremost stage of mining is to discover and explore the mineral deposit. First of all geologists and surveyors executes the feasibility study of deposit. They determine which method is best for mining. They calculate how much amount of mineral is available in that deposit. They also determine is that mineral explorable? These all facts are very important before starting a mining process. Without these informations, one cannot start the exploration of mineral deposit. A large amount of investment is being used for whole process of mining.

So, before executing the mining process you should clear about all these facts. Mining engineers and geologists work together and identify a mineral reserve. When mineral reserve is identified, then properties of that mineral are determined. These properties gives us valuable information about that mineral. These properties also decides the applications of that mineral. The properties are determined by chemical analysis. After determining the properties of mineral, then quantity of mineral is determined. Then engineers determine the extent of the mineral deposit and also calculate the purity of the mineral. After knowing the quantity of mineral deposit, quantity of pure and valuable material is calculated out of the whole deposit. Pure mineral is of significant importance. It is further used in processing. Pure mineral is utilized in various process and industrial applications. Mining engineers are interested in the quantity of pure mineral. The method through which mining takes place is very important. The profitability and success of the mining project depends on the process through which mining is being carried out. Feasibility study of the project covers a large number of aspects. If mining project is profitable, then a detailed study is undertaken. In feasibility study all aspects of project are undertaken like profitability, method of mining, legal issues, the total life of mineral reserve, the total value of reserve, etc. Feasibility study is a powerful tool for examining the project.
