Introduction to Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum engineering is a branch of engineering which is related with production of hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons can be either crude oil or natural gas. In oil and gas industry, the main focus is on exploration and production of hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons keeps a whole science in their structure and properties. Earth scientist and petroleum engineers explore the reservoirs of hydrocarbons. Petroleum engineering is started in 1914 under the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). 

The first degree in petroleum engineering was awarded by University of Pittsburgh in 1915. Petroleum engineering has solved many problems which comes in oil and gas industry. In petroleum engineering a detail study of hydrocarbons is carried out. Research in petrochemicals are also being executed. Fossil fuels are also deeply study and make an effort to further improve the efficiency of fossil fuel. Different other resources from which crude oil can be produced are also under research. In petroleum engineering, refineries keep a significance importance. They produce different types of grade of oils, lubricants, grease, wax and paving material.
Refinery engineering is main and important topic and subject in petroleum engineering. Refinery plays a significant role in the economic development, infrastructure development and prosperity of a country. In a refineries, a process of fractional distillation takes place. This process is used for refining of crude oil. Crude oil is extracted from Earth, does not exist in refined form. So, it undergoes refining process. In process of fractional distillation, crude oil is separated into fraction. Petroleum engineering is now advanced with the advent of computer. Computer helps petroleum engineers in many processes. Full control of oil wells are being carried out through computers. Computer gives us information about each and every parameter.                                                                                                                     

The analysis of different samples can be executed by computers. They also have the capability to detect fault in the system. Computers can inform you about the condition of a plant after every second. With the advent of new technologies like enhanced oil recovery and horizontal drilling, petroleum engineering reaches to a new horizon and new world. These approaches and technologies are very helpful. These technologies improve the  economic efficiency and economic growth of oil and gas industry.

Petroleum engineers and geologists utilizes their knowledge and experience for the accumulation of hydrocarbons throughout its life. They also have sound knowledge of development of a reservoir and its depletion. Many other fields are related to petroleum engineering. The knowledge of these fields is very important for petroleum engineers. Because these fields are interlinked to processing of hydrocarbons. These fields include geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (Well logging), reservoir simulation, economics, reservoir engineering, etc. Safety precautions should be kept in mind during exploration and mining of an oil field.                                                                                                                              
                                                                                                                             Petroleum engineers should also have a sound knowledge of mining principles, methods and processes. Because they also come across mining technologies in many situations. Petroleum engineering is very   unique and important field. Because it is related to such industry, which is the backbone of a country. Petroleum products generates major revenue of a country. Coal, natural gas and petrol are three fuels which are commonly studied in petroleum engineering. Nowadays, bio fuels are also utilized. Bio fuels are extracted from certain plants. Fuel obtained from plants involves different stages. Petroleum engineers deeply study hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons belong to organic compounds. Hydrocarbons are beneficial for us in different ways. The importance of hydrocarbons in petrochemicals cannot be ignored. The main scope of petroleum engineers lies in petrochemicals and fuel recovery.
